Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the February 1, 2021 coup, a total of (4,151) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution. In addition to the total fatality figure, AAPP has documented around (500) deceased persons whose names are unknown and still need to be verified.

Since the coup, a total of (25,319) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power, (19,600) are currently in detention, (7,799) of whom are serving sentences.

There are a total of (113) post-coup death row prisoners as of October 19, 2023. (119) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (43) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (156) people who have been sentenced to death. (5,719) people have already been released.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to data collected by AAPP, from January to October 19, 2023, (94) women and (203) men; (297) people in total, have been arrested by the junta in Mandalay Region. On October 13, junta forces arrested Zin Ko Tun from San Pya Ward, in Chanmyathazi Township, Mandalay Region, for allegedly being a PDF member.

In addition, during the stated period, (9) women and (66) men; (75) people in total, have been killed by the junta in Mandalay Region. On September 29, junta forces raided Tha Phan Kaing Village, in eastern Madaya Township, Mandalay Region. During the operation, they captured Than Tun, who was seeking refuge from Myaung Thit Village. He was killed on October 2. After the junta forces departed from the village, his body was discovered in the village, on the morning of October 6, bearing slash wounds on his thighs.
