Daily Briefing in Relation to the Military Coup

Since the 1 February 2021 coup, a total of (5,315) people, including pro-democracy activists and civilians, have been killed by the junta and pro-military groups during the Spring Revolution. In addition to the total fatality figure, AAPP has documented around (2,000) deceased persons whose names are unknown and still need to be verified.

Since the coup, a total of (26,908) people have been arrested by the junta in relation to its seizure of power, (20,627) are currently in detention, (9,227) of whom are serving sentences.

There are a total of (124) post-coup death row prisoners as of 24 June 2024. (119) people have been sentenced in absentia, of whom (43) have been sentenced to death. This makes a total of (167) people who have been sentenced to death. (6,281) people have already been released.

These are the numbers verified by AAPP. The actual numbers are likely much higher. We will continue to update accordingly.

According to monitoring carried out by AAPP’s Documentation and Research Department, in Sittwe Township, Rakhine State, the junta has been apprehending locals en masse, including children and the elderly, under various pretexts, and detaining them in their battalions. Some of these detainees were charged with specious charges, while others were released after ransom money was paid.

Moreover, freedom of expression has been rendered void during the junta’s rule. It is reported that last week, junta forces apprehended civilians in some states and regions, for participating in the Flower Strike to celebrate the birthday of State Counsellor, Daw Aung San Suu Kyi.
